Eric Wiltse

The year 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of Bumper To Bumper, The Complete Guide to Tractor-Trailer Operations, the truck book that Mike Byrnes & Assoc., Inc. first published in 1988, now in its fourth edition. To mark that anniversary, we want to recognize the people who use that book on a daily basis: the instructors of the finest truck driving programs around.

Our Instructor of the Month for July 2008, Eric Wiltse, has been an Instructor for the Western Pacific Truck School in California for six years. A 1996 Western Pacific Truck School graduate, he drove for a number of years before returning to the school to become an Instructor. He recently received Master Level Certification from the Commercial Vehicle Training Association "Mike Byrnes Instructor Development and Certification Program" and completed Western Pacific's Train the Trainer Program. In his spare time, Eric participates in a mentoring organization, along with his wife, also a CDL holder.

What's your proudest accomplishment?

It's very rewarding to see the students come in and with our help, go through a short training program, and then be able to start a new career after graduation. Many times this is the first successful venture of their lives and I am happy to be a part of it.

What do you enjoy about being a truck driving school educator?

I enjoy meeting new people from all different walks of life and a multitude of different cultures.

What tools do you find the most useful to assist you in educating?

Training aids whether written or visual, current information on changes in the industry, continuing education meetings and seminars, actual hands on training and tons of patience.

How did you get into being a driving instructor for your school?

The company I was working for went out of business after 30 years of operation. I saw Western Pacific Truck School's newspaper advertisement for an Instructor and thought it might be interesting. It definitely is!

What advice do you like to give your students to be successful in the trucking industry?

Keep their employment as consistent as possible. Always be willing to learn something new every day and give the best effort in everything they do.
