Leonard Ott

The year 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of Bumper To Bumper, The Complete Guide to Tractor-Trailer Operations, the textbook that Mike Byrnes & Assoc., Inc. first published in 1988, now in its fourth edition. To mark that anniversary, we want to recognize the people who use that book on a daily basis: the instructors of the finest truck driving programs around.

Our Instructor of the Month for August, 2008, Leonard Ott is the Manager of Education for Commercial Driver Training in New York. He drove for 30 years before becoming an Instructor. In his spare time, Leonard reads and plays golf.

Describe your biggest challenge in educating entry- level drivers.

Staying up to date on regulations and being able to incorporate that into our programs. Also, to teach students the right way to do things and have them go to a company that does not follow the rules is tough.

What do you enjoy about being a truck driving school educator?

Being able to give my knowledge and experience to the students and see how the students progress during the program. And, when they come back to show us the vehicle they are driving once they get a job.

How do you keep your skills sharp?

Reading trade publications and keeping up to date on new trends and regulations in the industry.

What advice do you like to give your students to be successful in the trucking industry?

Driving a truck requires a lot of responsibility on their part and they must be prepared to accept it if they want to succeed in this field.
